Awareness about Diabetic Retinopathy and Age related Macular Degeneration Diabetes starts affecting the retina when the person has had diabetes for over 10 years. Though a good glycaemic (Blood Sugar) control is necessary for general well being and may delay the appearance of Diabetic Retinopathy, it may not halt it altogether. It is necessary for diabetic patients to get their eyes checked at least once every year to know if the retina has been affected. A Fundus Fluorescence Angiography (FFA) and Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) may be required to assess the possible damage to the retina.
Treatment of diabetic Retinopathy and Age Related Macular Degeneration may include Anti- VEGF injection and laser photo coagulation. It has been seen that early treatment with laser benefits most cases and is able to preserve excellent vision for a life time.
In advanced cases of Diabetic Retinopathy it may be necessary to correct damage caused by vitreous hemorrhage surgically using endolaser vitrectomy.
Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is degenerative condition of the macula (Central part of the retina) caused by hardening of the arteries that nourish the retina. This deprives the sensitive retinal tissue of oxygen and nutrients that it needs to function and thrive. As a result the central vision deteriorates. There are two types of ARMD; Dry ARMD and Wet ARMD. Wet ARMD can be treated with good success with intravitreal Anti VEGF injections.
